New Year’s Resolutions

A 5 part series

After writing this blog post, editing it and then re-editing it, I have decided to make it into a series of posts.  There is just so much beneficial information to cover.  I don’t want to lose you in an extremely long post

Yes, it’s that time again; time to think about my New Year’s resolutions. I searched my computer for last year’s – re-read  them and I decided to rewrite and condense the list to 5 major New Year’s resolutions (last year, there were many more than that) and stick to the list.

New Year Resolutions

My 5 New Year’s Resolutions

  1. Random acts of kindness
  2. Healthy lifestyle
  3. Save more
  4. Recycle – up cycle
  5. Shop smarter

Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) (Here’s one great explanation of RAK)

RAKs come in many shapes and forms. It is being polite to a stranger, smiling to the old lady sitting across from you on the bus, letting the mother with two crying children ahead of you in the line at the grocery store.

My favorite, just hug somebody!

Healthy Lifestyle

Wow! This is a big one. It means I should be cooking healthier meals for my family, cutting down on sugar, white flour, and food additives.  I need a better fitness regime for the whole family, starting with myself. Being a good role model is important! A good start would be taking walks with the family on those beautiful weekend mornings or walking our little one to school instead of just jumping into the car.

Save more

Is the economy going to get better in 2012?  That’s a good question.  I know that I can improve on my family’s’ economics by just saving more, Living a frugal life is now trendy! First, I am finally going to write down all of our expenses that come off the top of our income every month; mortgage, utilities, education and car expenses… Then, I’ll write down our expected costs for food, clothing, entertainment and my personal favorite, miscellaneous. I will track everything that we spend money on for one month, and at the end of the month, we will have a true picture of where we can trim the fat and save some cash for a rainy day (or a sunny day family vacation).

Recycle – Upcycle

I must make more of an effort to save tomorrow’s environment. True, I won’t be around forever but my children and their children and grandchildren will be!

Recycle Bin I will:

  • Be more careful about separating our garbage!
    • Buy products in eco-friendly packaging
    • Make sure that my eco-friendly shopping bags are always in the car! (no plastic bags)
    • Recycling also means giving outgrown clothing to friends for their children to use and being grateful when I receive clothing from others.

Now I am thinking more and more about upcycling - Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or a higher environmental value. Yes! It’s trending and it’s so much fun with kids!

Shop Smarter

This probably should be a separate blog post (and it will be. Here are a few ways to shop smarter:

  • Shop with a list. (If it’s not on your list, keep moving.)
  • Look for coupons
  • Look for sales (flyers, newsletters, email specials)
  • Investigate; search the internet, use price comparison websites prior to shopping. (Don’t forget to read the store reviews!)
  • Read recommendations from strangers, but also from your friends!
  • Stock up on stuff that doesn’t go bad!

I think that the common denominator for all of my New Year’s resolutions is discipline. I think that I can do it! Can you?

I would love to hear about your New Year’s Resolutions! Please share your tips with us, too!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

Tis’ the season to be jolly…….

Merry Christmas

The holiday season is my favorite time of the year.  Gifting, family time, friend time and lots of good food – hey it works for me!

On the serious side, it is easy to get caught up in the hustle of the season, but I think we should all just take a deep breath, look around us and see all the good that there is.  And there is!

I am a person who loves advancement, technology and any thing new but I also love feeling nostalgic.  I hope you like this.

From all of us at PalTip,

Peace, Joy and Love

PS.   We would love to know how you are spending your holidays.

My After Christmas Shopping Roadmap

The holidays are not even here yet but I am already working on my after Christmas shopping activities! I love shopping – I love shopping even more when I get a good deal. In today’s economic climate every penny counts. So I am the deal queen (and shopping queen, and stain remover queen and….. on and on). Did you know that you can save up to 80% on the original price if you wait until after Christmas?

Top After Christmas Sale Items

Now is when I start to organize my list of what I should buy on sale. There are birthdays and anniversaries throughout the year – I am a gift stocker!

  1. Electronics (For TVs wait till after January 1st)
  2. Winter clothes
  3. Toys
  4. Christmas decorations
  5. Gift cards
  6. Perfume and Bath sets

5 Tips for pre After Christmas (Boxing Day for the British) Shopping:

  1. Make sure you are on the mailing lists for your favorite retail (online or off) outlets.
  2. Make sure you get the paper over the holiday weekend.
  3. Make sure you have your birthday list (friends and family) updated including what they like and what sizes they wear.
  4. Get those coupons organized! (many retail outlets accept coupons on top of discounts).
  5. Start shopping for your online purchases on Christmas Day – Stock is usually limited and the stores are still closed!

With all the information that I have ready – I usually check out Amazon first for books and electronics, I am on the mailing lists for Old Navy, Target, so I will be ok for kids clothing and shoes.com for my addictiion. And Sephora for those special girlie gifts (and colognes for a few men like my husband, father-in-law, and brother).

Mall Map

With a little bit of planning, a good few hours on the internet and a preplanned mall map of the stops that you want to make according to flyers and paper advertisements you can save lots of your hard earned cash and be prepared for gifting occasions in the future!

How do you plan your after Christmas shopping? Do you make a list a head of time?

Transparency and Disclosures

There are so many bloggers out there recommending products. Are they getting compensated for their reviews? Some do, some don’t. Some of those bloggers receive products from major brands all the time, and some smaller bloggers reach out to brands, but either way according to the FTA they should have a disclosure statement on their website. (Here is a great FAQ about the FTA regulation.)

I have been helping a friend set up her blog (it is going to be a mommy blog full of chic design and geeky stuff) and was looking for inspiration from some of my favorite blogs. I found that bloggers who are reviewing products either have basic disclosure statements (ones that they found from a “template”), and others have disclosures with individual flavor. The latter I think is the best way to go.

What is right? Good question. What is more fun to read?

I think that those who have taken the effort to be original and have added their voice to the disclosure statement. My suggestion to my friend is that she adds a little about herself, about her blog, what type of products she reviews and recommends. I also suggested that she reviews and recommends items that she doesn’t get pitched about direct from the brand/manufacturer! And by the way you can monetize those recommendations too (check this out).

Product Review

Speak to your niche!

If you have a blog make sure that you include those items that you have in your home, use all the time and can’t live without. You must convey that you are trust worthy – that you are honest and that your blog – apart from your money making reviews is a place for people to return to. Speak to your circle of friends in a language that they will understand and relate to. Include all of this in your disclosure and post it in a place that people can actually find.

Don’t hide it. If you hide it – that will convey a message to your readers that you are hiding something from them, which will result in them assuming you’re untrustworthy and we don’t want that.

5 Sample Disclosure Statements:

  1. The Coupon Cutie
  2. Digital Mom Blog
  3. The Slacker Mom
  4. Mom Reviews
  5. Suburban Turmoil Reviews

Some bloggers even have their disclosures on the side of every post.

For the rules and regulations of disclosure here is a site that might help you out: FTC Guidelines

Now if you need help in finding great new trendy stuff to try out, review and to share your recommendations with your friends – that is my next post …… I would love to hear back from you on where you find new “stuff” below (comments, Twitter or Facebook).

Here Comes the Bride

Mother of the Bride? I mean, Mother of the Flower Girl!

I am so excited! Is there anything better than crying (good crying) at a wedding?

Well on February 14th I will be the one in the first row with my grandmother’s antique lace hanky blowing my nose and ruining my makeup (which I will get done professionally).  My favorite brother in law is getting married! Celebration time!

As soon as they called me with the news, my heart started to beat fast, anxious to get to my computer and search for the newest trends in wedding fashion.  I am a fashionista at heart and I am going to make sure that this family will be picture perfect for the affair!

I have a 7 1/2 year old princess, just saying.

“MJ [my daughter] will be a Flower Girl of course” I said, followed by a pause; then the bride said, “Of course! I also have 3 other little nieces…” I repied, “leave it to me – oh this is going to be fun being the mother of the brri… flower girl!”, and didn’t give her the chance to continue. (Disclosure:  I think that my future sister-in-law is great and I love her.)

My mission begins.

1. Wedding Trends for 2012

Oh yes before that I had to take a peek at my favorite wedding planner’s site for some inspiration (this woman has style.)

2. Some more Google searches on flower girls dresses, there are tons of sites – a lot of them have the same dresses but varying in prices.

3. Read some great bride-to-be blogs and searched for dress recommendations

Then I landed on the video from Prince Williams wedding (and cried)

Cute? Yes – The length – great! Puffy sleeves no! (I am traumatized by this – do you see why?)

My wedding shopping guidelines:

  • Style : Simplicity– 4 girls under the age of 8 – walking down the aisle – yes simple.
  • Bride coordination: The bride is wearing a very classic form fitting simple gown (stunning)
  • Budget – would like to stay under $100 for each dress
  • Colors: I know that I need ivory dresses – and the brides bouquet is going to be red (the wedding is on Valentine’s Day), ivory and red
  • Future usability: How many bridesmaid dresses do you have in your closet?

Recommendations from Friends

I posted on Facebook that I was looking for Flower Girl dresses asking my friends for retail recommendations.  One friend said EBay – really? Yes! Wow, I was amazed to see how many dresses I found there.

I found a seller with a nice collection, asked questions, received replies, asked more questions, received more replies – ordered 4 – and within no time at all I had them in my house.

  • Style : classic
  • Bride: Happy
  • Colors: Perfect
  • Budget – way way under! (4 dresses for $100) not including shipping
  • Future usability – at those prices who cares!  The dress-up box just got better!

So here is a quick look at the dress (just trying it on for fun)

Making the Right Purchase

Using the Power of Crowd-sourcing

I don’t know why, but I’m someone that people go to when they need to buy something. Actually, I suspect I know why. I’m, shall we say, particular (and when I say particular I mean fussy and difficult, but in a good way), about the things I buy and the money I spend. And as such, you know if I like something – it’s probably great. I also love telling my friends about new products that I’ve tried and loved.

Do you ever read about great new products that your friends use and recommend on Facebook or Twitter or wherever? I do all of the time. I also recommend things to others via Facebook and Twitter (and occasionally via Instagram).

Buying and Recommending

I’m passionate about baking and feel comfortable saying I am a great baker. I strive for excellence when it comes to baking.  One way of becoming a better baker is by using better tools, so I went on a mission to purchase the best mixer out there (within my budget).

How did I do this?

  • I did some basic research to find out who the leading brands are(KitchenAid, Kenwood, etc)
  • I read some of the product reviews from other bloggers, and of course the brand blog.
  • I sourced the item on comparison sites
  • Then I posted on Facebook: “Which mixer is the best?” and a link to one of the top rated mixers.

I wasn’t surprised that immediately I received comments from friends with tips and recommendations – they bake (they probably think that they are more superior bakers than me – ha!). I was now educated on which brand and size I should purchase.  Power to the people!

Recommended Mixer

I purchased that wonderful shiny new mixer and have been successfully baking like mad. Now I am an extreme baker!   Should I, would I, could I recommend this shiny new mixer to others?  Yes! I love that I can combine social and shopping; I might even throw in one of my favorite recipes.

Extreme Baker

I proudly share my new found knowledge, reviewing (there are always pros and cons) and then blasting my recommendations out there.  I am sure that one of my friends, after seeing (and some tasting) what I have baked will need a new mixer in the very near future and click on my product recommendation.

I call my system “My Lucky #7 Rule”

The system works with everything – not only with finding and recommending tools to create delicious high calorie treats! I have used it to find a new digital camera and a printer for my office.

  1. Search Google
  2. Go to the major brands’ websites
  3. Compare prices on shopping sites
  4. Use Facebook (social networks) – ask your friends for their recommendations and experience
  5. Buy
  6. Use
  7. Recommend (using PalTip) ;)

Do you share recommendations for great stuff that you have purchased with your friends? I would love to read about your finds – join our conversation on Facebook!

Please share your thoughts in the comments or on Twitter and Facebook , we are always there!
